What are your thoughts about this cover for a temporary fix to a cracked dash and a wife who doesn't like that cracked dash?

I'd say you're one ahead of the most of us in that the wife is allowing you to make a K5 parts purchase! :)

I've seen one of those on a K5 that was for sale once...it fit right on top of the OEM dash, but after time it had warped up on the corners and wasn't laying in there quite right. The color had faded real bad too. Course I have no idea how long it had been in there...

Haha! It is true. I guess living in the OC my wife wants it to look nice. It looks nice in my book, but she has different tastes. I eventually want to replace the instrument panel with a digital display and new top cover. That's a wee bit pricey, so I need to save the money for that; Hence needing something that will last a year or so. Any other ideas?

I have that cover, there are still parts of the dash that is visible. If I would've thought about taking the dash off and fixing it with bondo I would have. Just my two cents but I think it would look better, plus cheaper!

Its funny. That cover shows up everywhere. I have bought dozens of these trucks that had those covers and though they are designed to cover up the bad dash (Which they do) they wont get you a win in a car show thats for sure. Perfection they do not offer. Quick glance looks they do offer.

And as pointed out. They do Crack and warp.

I would get a dash mat to cover up the cracks, plus there will be less glare and you can replace the mat pretty easily.

I would start suggesting some Escalade leather seats to the wife as well :D

With some luck you might find one on CL or in you local junk yard. I found a guy in Chicago who had one for sale on CL complete interior for a 100 bucks but I a ready found one in a junk yard. But good luck.

I'd just get a new one especially if the wife gives the green light :) I enjoy fixing things and redoing them, but the dash and components are and carpet I personally want to be new.

I saw that too, but it says it's for a '79-'80. Can I use that on my '73?

The only thing with LMC is shipping they rape you when they ship. Brother's is in Cali. So you may want to just take a drive down to brothers and pick it up....

The only problem with this forum is that there are so many cool ideas that I now need to get a second job to pay for it all!!! I do have a slight advantage in having a wife who has never owned a used car (grandfather worked for Ford-big discounts) and wants things looking nice. I'll get a new dash pad. I also want a digital display I've seen some guys have, but for approx $650, I need to save for that. I already spent close to $2K in accessories and I just got the dang truck on Saturday afternoon!!! Brothers is only about 30-40 minutes away from me. I know... I know.... it's just the start! Seriously, you guys rock. This site has helped me so much. Thanks for being patient with a K5 newbie!

I guess I really need to appreciate my wife more. I just told her that I found the full dash pad (instead of the cover), but said it would only make sense to put that on when we are ready to replace the whole front. She said to just go ahead and do it so she can feel like it is a new truck (she is a bit of a new car snob). I was thinking of the digital display. Any feedback or suggestions of what would make my K5 look good?

I thought the digital display with blue lights would look nice along with a black dash pad. I think it would compliment my blue paint color and black roll bars and interior. Thoughts? Suggestions? Again, I know it isn't much of a rock crawler look, but it is meant to be a fun weekend truck.

It's always good to check our for sale section before dropping cash on something like that. I don't know if it's still up for grabs but someone had a full set of dakota digital gauges...

That's a lot of blue up front... I'd go with a black dash pad, but that's just my taste. I'm not really a fan of the wood grain plastic either... I'd get a new bezel, they are fairly easy to come by on craigslist or the junkyard. And a tip from a guy who learned the hardway... don't get a steering wheel with chrome spokes... when you're out in the sun that $h1t will blind a guy!

Black pad is what I was thinking the whole way. I can't stand wood grain either. Black there. Never thought about the chrome spokes. Lot's of sun here in So Cal. Black it is! Thanks for the tips! Do the Dakota Digital gauges go on sale occasionally? I can be somewhat patient if they do. The only thing I would keep is the clue metal bottom to the dash. That's in good shape. Everything else goes.

I have a dash pad cover from the PO, if i was fixing it up to be a dd or a show rig i would not have bought it But being my little palytoy i think it looks great. If you want i can post pictures when it stops raining. But it sounds like your mind is made up and i can't agree more with ya, if i could afford it i would have a new dash also. I don't have a wife that would tell me to go for it, heck i don't have a wife at all. Where did you get her?? Any more left???lol

A new steering wheel sure doesn't hurt either.

I have one of those on mine. I was so upset when I got it in the mail. The red color didn't seem to fit in with my interior and the cover itself didn't much fit over the dash. Also... the air vents were a bit tought to get seated. The top defrost vents wouldn't go back into the cover. The aluminum piece on the drives side is a small amount too long and tall to fit into the provided grove. Last but not least, the adhesive they sent is a bit messy. I wish I had just spent the extra money and bought a new dash.

This isn't a cover. It's a new pad. I removed the old one and installed the new pad. Attaches with the original factory clips and four screws.

SoCal, my response wasn't directed at your post, my response was in response the to initial post asking about the cover. Maybe I should have used the reply with quotes.

Gotcha. No worries. I am glad I got the new pad, especially after your post. :-)
